Great heil driver

The response of The Great Heil extends past a (measured) 20K. Of course I could design and build any type bass section but why bother? To be more efficient it would have to be much larger, mms would go up (I believe in the lowest possible), driver spacing would suffer, and more. This is a legendary speaker driver that was used in some speaker systems, mostly in the 70s and early 80s. Its unique topology comes from the mind of a brilliant man, Dr. Oskar Heil ( to ). He came up with 2 particularly interesting inventions, you may have heard of the first- the Field Effect Transistor, or FET.  · To me they sounded just like most critics describe them 'a nice sounding, cool looking tweeter with a flabby, slow woofer and a hole in the midrange'. I've heard that the AMT-3 model with the midrange driver sound better. A large reason for thei attraction in the day, imo, was the great Heil tweeter was a dipole, which was new to a lot of people.

Re: ESS Heil Amt Can't help with the new ones. Had original AMT-1s (new). Best speakers I have heard. Still kick myself for listening to my wife and getting rid of them when we had kids. I would guess the low end driver and PR are a lot better tha n the original. The air motion transformer was fabulous. Still $ is a lot of cash. Heil had several versions of this driver, but as I said the AMT1 is the biggun, the one that started it all, and as such is the most interesting both historically and from a hi-fi perspective. The mode of operation of a Heil AMT is unique amongst loudspeakers, in that it's not a "in-out" transducer.
